Cliniko and Tyro Health: claims without a terminal

Tyro Health is a separate company that connects to Cliniko by API key, letting a practice raise Medicare bulk bill claims, Medicare patient claims, DVA claims and private health fund claims from the Cliniko invoice screen without a card terminal, according to Cliniko's help centre. Provider numbers must be entered identically in both Cliniko and Tyro Health for a claim to go through.

What does not sync

    Set it up

    1. Open a Tyro Health account first. Cliniko's help centre notes Tyro Health is a separate company with its own fees, and Medicare claiming specifically needs an application to Medicare that the Tyro Health team helps complete.
    2. In Cliniko, go to Settings, Integrations, and find the Tyro Health section near the top of the page.
    3. Enter the 32 character API key generated in your Tyro Health account.
    4. Set the payment allocation for Medicare, and confirm the mandatory allocations for health fund and credit card payments.
    5. Click Save Tyro Health settings.
    6. Add every practitioner's provider number to their Cliniko user settings, matching what is entered in Tyro Health exactly, since a mismatch is a common reason a claim does not go through.

    One connection, three claim types

Tyro Health, formerly known as Medipass, sits between Cliniko and Medicare, DVA and the private health funds. Once the API key is in place, a practitioner raises a claim from the Cliniko invoice the same way regardless of which of the three claim types it is, and Cliniko's help centre describes all three as reachable without a card terminal on the desk.

That terminal free part matters for private health fund claims specifically, because it used to require one. Tyro Health retired its terminal based HICAPS claiming and replaced it with HealthPoint, a phone based flow, on 3 February 2023. A practice asking about "Cliniko HICAPS integration" today is really asking about this HealthPoint connection through Tyro Health.

What has to match before a claim goes through

Provider numbers are the detail Cliniko's help centre flags hardest. Every practitioner who will process a Medicare or DVA claim needs their provider number entered in Tyro Health and again in Cliniko's user settings, and the two need to match exactly. A typo in one of the two records is enough to stop a claim resolving, and it will not always be obvious from the error alone that a provider number mismatch is the cause.

Medicare claiming carries an extra step before any of this: the practice needs a Tyro Health account with Medicare claiming switched on, which means an application to Medicare itself. Cliniko's help centre notes Tyro Health's own team assists with that application, but it is not something the Cliniko integration can shortcut.

What the front desk actually sees

Day to day, the claim is raised from the same invoice screen the front desk already uses. For a HealthPoint private health fund claim, the patient gets an SMS, enters their health fund membership details, and approves the claim from their phone rather than tapping a card on a terminal. The payment status then updates on the Cliniko invoice once Tyro Health has processed it, so most of the workflow stays inside Cliniko rather than a separate Tyro Health dashboard.
