Integration
Does Cliniko integrate with HICAPS?
Not directly, and not as a HICAPS terminal any more. Cliniko connects private health fund claiming through Tyro Health, formerly Medipass, which replaced its terminal based HICAPS claiming with a phone based service called HealthPoint on 3 February 2023, according to Cliniko's help centre. A practice searching for a HICAPS integration today is looking for this Tyro Health connection.

What syncs, and when
| What | Direction | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Health fund claim | Cliniko to Tyro Health | Practitioner selects Tyro Health Private Health Insurance as the payment method on a Cliniko invoice | Cliniko's help centre describes this as raising the claim from the invoice, not from a HICAPS terminal, since Tyro Health's HealthPoint service replaced terminal based HICAPS claiming. |
| Claim request | Tyro Health to patient | Claim raised on the invoice | An SMS is sent to the patient with the claim details; the patient enters their health fund membership details and approves the request from their own phone rather than tapping a card at the desk. |
| Claim result | Tyro Health to Cliniko | Patient approves, or the health fund responds | The payment status updates on both the payment page and the invoice in Cliniko, and how it shows on invoices and reports depends on the payment allocation type chosen. |
What does not sync
- A physical HICAPS terminal. Cliniko never had a terminal integration of its own, and Tyro Health, the company that provided HICAPS claiming, retired the terminal based service in favour of HealthPoint in February 2023.
- Medicare and DVA claims through this specific flow. HealthPoint is described in Cliniko's help centre as a private health fund claiming service; Medicare and DVA claims run through the same Tyro Health connection but as a separate claim type, not through HealthPoint.
- Provider number matching for pure private health fund claims. Cliniko's help centre ties provider number matching to Medicare and DVA claims specifically; a private health fund claim does not depend on it the same way.
The word HICAPS is doing old work
HICAPS was the brand of terminal used across Australian allied health clinics to process private health fund claims at the desk, a card tap and a claim went through together. Cliniko's help centre is specific that this changed: Tyro Health, the company behind that claiming, phased out HICAPS and introduced HealthPoint, a terminal free version of the same claim, on 3 February 2023.
Cliniko itself was never the company running HICAPS. What Cliniko has always had is a connection to Tyro Health, and it is that connection, not a HICAPS terminal driver, that a practice is actually looking for when it searches for a Cliniko HICAPS integration.
What a HealthPoint claim looks like at the desk
The practitioner or front desk raises the claim from the Cliniko invoice by choosing Tyro Health Private Health Insurance as the payment method, the same screen used for any other payment type. From there Tyro Health sends the patient an SMS, the patient enters their health fund membership number on their own phone, and approves the claim themselves. There is no terminal to hand across the desk and no card to tap.
This is a genuine change in workflow for a clinic used to a HICAPS terminal, not just a rebrand. The claim now depends on the patient having their phone on them and their health fund details ready, rather than a card the desk can process regardless.
Where this sits next to Medicare and DVA claims
The same Tyro Health connection that carries HealthPoint private health fund claims also carries Medicare and DVA claims, but Cliniko's help centre treats HealthPoint as its own claim flow rather than folding it into the Medicare and DVA claiming setup. Getting HealthPoint working does not require the Medicare specific setup, such as a Tyro Health account with Medicare claiming enabled or matching provider numbers, that Medicare and DVA claims need.
