ReturnToWorkSA psychology fees 2026-27
From 1 July 2026 ReturnToWorkSA pays psychologists $265.20 per hour for an initial or subsequent consultation (PS200, PS220), exclusive of GST, capped at 1.5 hours per session. That hourly rate also covers assessments, reports and case conferences. Only a neuropsychological assessment (PS232) needs a clinical neuropsychologist endorsement from AHPRA.

What changed this year
- This is the fee schedule effective 1 July 2026, gazetted in the South Australian Government Gazette. ReturnToWorkSA republishes the psychology schedule as a dated PDF each cycle.
- Almost every consultation, assessment and report on this table bills at the same $265.20 hourly rate, with the session length cap doing the work of differentiating a standard consultation (1.5 hours) from a neuropsychological assessment (12 hours) or a comprehensive report (4 hours).
- Group therapy (PS250) is the one fee not billed hourly, at $52.50 per participant, for sessions of 2 to 15 workers or family members under a psychologist's continuous supervision.

One hourly rate, differentiated by session cap
ReturnToWorkSA's psychology fee schedule, effective 1 July 2026, prices almost every service at $265.20 per hour, from a standard initial consultation (PS200) capped at 1.5 hours through to a comprehensive treating report (PS810) capped at 4 hours and a neuropsychological assessment (PS232) capped at 12 hours. What separates one item from another on this table is mostly the maximum billable time and who can deliver it, not the hourly rate itself.
Group therapy (PS250) is the exception, priced per participant rather than per hour, at $52.50 for sessions of 2 to 15 workers or family members under a psychologist's continuous direct supervision.
Neuropsychological assessment needs a specific endorsement
A neuropsychological assessment and report (PS232) is the one item on this schedule restricted to a specific AHPRA credential: the psychologist must hold at minimum an endorsement to practice as a clinical neuropsychologist. The assessment covers an interview, history taking and objective neuropsychological testing, and the report must detail findings, tests conducted, observations, results and treatment recommendations, submitted within 10 business days of the assessment. At up to 12 hours billable, it is also the longest single item on the table by a wide margin.
By contrast, a general psychological assessment (PS230) is capped at 2 hours and does not require the neuropsychologist endorsement, so confirm which code applies before booking a lengthy assessment.
GST, invoicing timeframes and same-day limits
As with ReturnToWorkSA's physiotherapy and occupational therapy schedules, psychology fees are exclusive of GST and the insurer adds GST on top where it applies, rather than treating the service as GST free. Invoices are due within four weeks of the service, and generally will not be paid more than six months after the service date without exceptional circumstances.
ReturnToWorkSA will only pay for one consultation, assessment or group therapy session per worker per day, so a same-day follow-up cannot be billed as a second PS200 or PS220 regardless of how the sessions were structured.
Claiming notes
- All amounts in this schedule are exclusive of GST. Where GST applies, the insurer pays the GST-exclusive fee plus the GST amount on top, so psychology treatment under ReturnToWorkSA is not GST free the way psychologist-delivered treatment is under SIRA NSW.
- To bill ReturnToWorkSA, a psychologist must be registered as a psychologist with AHPRA, including provisional registration, and registered by ReturnToWorkSA, which registers a provider automatically on receipt of their first invoice.
- A neuropsychological assessment and report (PS232) can only be billed by a psychologist with a minimum of an endorsement to practice as a clinical neuropsychologist from AHPRA, and the report must be submitted within 10 business days of the assessment.
- Invoices must be submitted within four weeks of the service. Invoices received more than six months after the date of service may not be paid unless exceptional circumstances apply.
- Multiple consultations, psychological assessments or group therapy sessions for the same worker on the same day are not paid; ReturnToWorkSA will pay for only one such service per worker per day.
- A psychology management plan (PSMP) can be initiated by the treating psychologist every 6 treatments, a shorter interval than physiotherapy and occupational therapy's every-10-treatments cycle on ReturnToWorkSA's own schedules.
- The treating psychology summary report (PS820) can be requested by the claims manager or worker, or initiated by the psychologist after every 6th consultation, and should go to the claims manager and treating medical practitioner.
Load these fees into your practice software
- Cliniko supports bulk import of billable items under Settings, then Data & docs, then Data imports, choosing Billable items.
- Add a GST tax type first if you have not already, and set it on the ReturnToWorkSA psychology items, since these fees are GST exclusive with GST added on top rather than GST free.
- Build a CSV with Item code, Name, Price (ex. tax), Taxable and Item type. Because most items share the $265.20 hourly rate, name each one for what it is, for example "RTWSA PS200 Initial consultation" versus "RTWSA PS232 Neuropsych assessment", so reporting and reception can tell a 1.5 hour consultation from a 12 hour assessment.
- CURAP (equipment and therapeutic aids) has no fixed price, it reimburses reasonable cost. Load it at $0 as a placeholder and add the actual cost to each invoice.
- Since most psychology items share one hourly rate, a single price update each July covers nearly the whole item list at once: export existing billable items, update the $265.20 group in one pass, and re-import, keeping the original export as a backup.
