ServiceM8 quote template for electricians: points and circuits

This ServiceM8 quote template counts the job in points (outlets, light fittings, data points) and circuits rather than one lump sum, then prices a switchboard upgrade and any missing safety switches as separate Quote Options. In Queensland, an owner must fit an approved safety switch to every general purpose socket outlet, which the switchboard section is built to catch before the job starts.

Set it up in ServiceM8

  1. Start from the base ServiceM8 quote template and its field codes, then add the sections below rather than rebuilding from scratch.
  2. In ServiceM8 open Settings > Forms > Add Form and name it Electrical points and circuits, adding each question above in order. Choice means Multiple Choice, tick Mandatory where required is true.
  3. Click Download Sample Template to lay the count out as a table (points, rate each, subtotal) above the standard jobMaterial line items for switchboard parts.
  4. Create billable items for Power point (per point), Light point (per point), New circuit (per circuit), Safety switch (per switch) and Switchboard upgrade, so pricing follows the count rather than being typed fresh each time.
  5. Where the job could need a board upgrade or not, build both as separate Quote Options so the customer sees and accepts the actual price for either path.
  6. Put {document} in your quote email and SMS templates so the customer can view and accept online, and add image_customer_signature for a signed acceptance.
  7. Run it on a test job with a mixed count (power points, one dedicated outlet, two new circuits, one missing safety switch) before your estimators use it.

Why points and circuits, not just a total

Electricians price by what is being added to the switchboard, not by square metre or by the minute, so a quote that only shows a total forces the customer to trust a number they cannot check. Counting points, power outlets, light fittings, data and TV points, and the circuits they sit on, gives the customer something they can compare against their own idea of the job (six power points and a new circuit, say) and gives the office a consistent way to price similar jobs. The table below asks for the count before the price, so an estimator working from a floor plan fills in numbers, not a lump figure.

Circuits matter for a second reason: a Queensland switchboard already close to its circuit limit can turn a simple add on into a board upgrade, and that has to be its own priced line rather than a surprise on the day.

The switchboard check that avoids a compliance surprise

Queensland law puts a specific duty on the owner of a domestic residence: within 90 days of taking possession, an approved safety switch has to be fitted for every general purpose socket outlet on the property, and if a tenancy starts later without one fitted, the same 90 day duty falls on the owner again from the start of that tenancy. The maximum penalty for not doing so is 15 penalty units. A "general purpose socket outlet" here is the regulation's own term for the standard 10A three pin outlet meant to be used for more than one appliance, not a single dedicated outlet such as one wired for a specific appliance.

That makes the safety switch check worth doing on every quote, not only on rewires: an estimator who finds an unprotected circuit during the site visit has found a legal duty on the owner, not just an upsell, and the quote should say so plainly rather than bundling it silently into the switchboard line.

Turning the count into priced options

Build the points and circuits table as its own Form, or as a block on the quote template itself, then price from it: a rate per point, a rate per new circuit, and the switchboard and safety switch work as separate lines so a customer who already has switches fitted is not charged to fit them again. Where the job could go two ways, for example a straightforward add versus a board upgrade if there is no spare capacity, build both as Quote Options: the customer sees both prices, accepts one online, and ServiceM8 moves the job to a work order and restores that version's billable items automatically.

Keep AS/NZS 3000, the wiring rules, as the standard every circuit and point count is checked against: the regulation itself requires electrical installations to comply with the wiring rules, so it is the reference an estimator falls back to when a floor plan does not match what is actually on site.

What this form will not do

  • The safety switch duty described here is Queensland's own Electrical Safety Regulation 2013. Other states set their own rules and penalties, so a version of this quote for another state needs its own legal check before the safety switch line is worded the same way.
  • ServiceM8 Forms and quote templates do not calculate. The estimator enters the point and circuit counts, and the office builds the price from billable items; nothing here works out cost from the count automatically.
  • AS/NZS 3000 is sold by Standards Australia and is not reproduced here. Check your own current copy for point and circuit limits per protective device, which this page does not state.
  • The safety switch question records what the estimator saw on the day. It is not a certificate of compliance and does not replace testing by a licensed electrical worker.
