DVA dietetics fee schedule 2026-27

From 1 July 2026 DVA pays $107.55 (GST-free) for a standard initial dietetics consultation (item DT01), up from $104.80 under the 1 July 2025 schedule. An extended initial consultation (DT10) pays $134.35. Consultations away from rooms attract an automatic $26.90 out of rooms loading. The 12 session treatment cycle still applies and you cannot charge the veteran a gap.

What changed this year

  • Every dollar fee rose by roughly 2.6 per cent against the 1 July 2025 schedule. DT01, the standard initial consultation, moved from $104.80 to $107.55, and the extended initial (DT10) from $130.90 to $134.35.
  • The out of rooms loading, automatically added when you see a client away from rooms, rose from $26.20 to $26.90.
  • No rules changed. The definitions, item structure and treatment cycle carry over unchanged from the 1 July 2025 schedule.
  • Dietetics has no group or aquatic item, and no lymphoedema, vestibular or pelvic health specialty item, unlike the physiotherapy schedule. The two consultation lengths (standard and extended) plus diet analysis and menu development cover the whole discipline.

What changed on 1 July 2026

DVA published a new dietitians schedule of fees effective 1 July 2026, replacing the schedule that started on 1 July 2025. As with the other allied health disciplines, the change is indexation only, roughly 2.6 per cent across every item. DT01, the standard initial consultation, is now $107.55, up from $104.80. The extended initial (DT10 or DT11 at home) is $134.35, up from $130.90.

The out of rooms loading, which is added automatically whenever you see a client somewhere other than your rooms, rose from $26.20 to $26.90. Nothing else in the schedule's structure or wording changed between the two versions.

A smaller item set than physio or OT, built around two consultation lengths

Dietetics does not have a group session item, an aquatic item, or a specialty treatment item the way physiotherapy has for lymphoedema or pelvic health. The whole discipline runs on two consultation lengths, standard and extended, repeated across rooms, home, public hospital, private hospital and residential aged care, plus diet analysis (DT40 series) and individual menu development (DT50) as standalone items.

Extended consultations exist for genuinely complex cases: a difficult clinical presentation, or an acute condition that needs attention while a chronic one is also being actively managed. DVA does not define a minimum duration for DT10 or DT30 the way some other disciplines set 20 or 30 minute cut offs, so the test is clinical complexity rather than the clock.

The out of rooms loading is easy to under bill

Because the loading is a separate line rather than a different consultation code, it is the fee most likely to be missed on manual invoices. DVA pays it automatically for any consultation delivered away from rooms, home visits, aged care and public or private hospital work included, but only once per visit. If your practice software does not have it as its own billable item, a home visit invoice quietly loses $26.90 every time.

The treatment cycle rules match the rest of the allied health schedules: a GP referral covers up to 12 sessions or one year, an end of cycle report (DT90, $35.40) is claimed once per cycle after it reaches the client's usual GP, and services delivered while a client is admitted to hospital sit outside the cycle altogether.

Loading the schedule into Cliniko

With around 30 items across five settings, a dietetics DVA list is a manageable one off CSV import. Every consultation item except the end of cycle report and the direct supply item is GST-free, which simplifies the Taxable column considerably compared with a discipline that mixes GST-free and taxable consumables. Add the out of rooms loading as its own line item so reception can stack it onto a home visit invoice without needing to remember the dollar figure.

When DVA republishes the schedule each 1 July, export your existing billable items, update only the Price column against the new PDF, and re-import with the price field only. That keeps the same Item IDs so historical invoices still show the fee that applied on the day of service.

Claiming notes

Load these fees into your practice software

  1. Cliniko supports bulk import of billable items. Go to Settings, then Data & docs, then Data imports, choose Billable items and click Import.
  2. Before importing, add a GST tax type under Settings if you have not already. The import matches the Taxable column against tax types that already exist in your account.
  3. Build a CSV with a heading row and these columns: Item code, Name, Price (ex. tax), Taxable, Item type. Put the DVA code (for example DT01) in Item code, a name that starts with DVA (for example "DVA DT01 Initial consultation, rooms") so reception can find it, the fee from the table above in Price (ex. tax), and service in Item type.
  4. All dietetics items except DT90 and DT99 are GST-free, so leave Taxable blank on every row except those two.
  5. Add the out of rooms loading as its own billable item (for example "DVA Loading, out of rooms") so it can be added as a second line on a home or aged care invoice alongside the consultation item.
  6. Upload the CSV, click Next to match information, check each column matched, then click Import and finish. The items appear under Settings, Billable items.
  7. Each July, update prices in bulk rather than creating new items: export billable items as a CSV from Data exports, keep the Item ID column and the price column, change the prices, then import it again and enable only the price field. Cliniko warns there is no undo, so keep the original export.
  8. To claim DVA from inside Cliniko you need the Tyro Health integration on a Tyro Health plan that includes DVA claiming. Store the client's DVA number in their patient file so it fills the claim form automatically.
