DVA psychology fee schedule 2026-27

From 1 July 2026, DVA pays a registered psychologist $118.75 for a 20 to 50 minute consultation in rooms (item US11) and $167.65 for 50 or more minutes (US14). A clinical psychologist is paid more for the same work, $167.65 and $246.10. DVA does not fund couples counselling; Open Arms provides that separately on 1800 011 046.

What changed this year

  • Every registered psychologist fee rose by about 2.6 per cent from the 1 July 2025 schedule. The standard in-rooms consultation (US11) moved from $115.70 to $118.75, and the 50 minute consultation (US14) from $163.40 to $167.65.
  • Clinical psychologist fees rose the same amount. The 30 to 50 minute in-rooms item (US01) moved from $163.40 to $167.65, matching what a registered psychologist now charges for a shorter 20 to 50 minute session.
  • Unlike podiatry, physiotherapy and speech pathology, DVA did not reissue the psychologist or clinical psychologist schedules in January 2026. The most recent DVA fee schedules index lists 1 July 2025 as the schedule immediately before 1 July 2026 for both psychology professions, so this page compares 12 months of indexation rather than 6.
  • Item numbers and claiming rules did not change. A clinical psychologist's minimum session length is 30 minutes; a registered psychologist's is 20 minutes. Both share the same trauma focussed therapy, group therapy, case conference and end of cycle report structure, just under different item prefixes and higher fees for the clinical psychologist.

Two schedules, priced differently for the same work

DVA runs two separate fee schedules for talking therapy: one for registered psychologists (item prefix US1x to US9x) and a higher priced one for clinical psychologists (item prefix US0x). A clinical psychologist's minimum consultation is 30 minutes and pays $167.65 in rooms; a registered psychologist's minimum is 20 minutes and pays $118.75 for the same 20 to 50 minute band. For a 50 minute or longer session both schedules charge more, and the clinical psychologist rate ($246.10) is again roughly 47 per cent above the registered psychologist rate ($167.65).

The gap reflects AHPRA's separate area of practice endorsement in clinical psychology, which needs postgraduate study and supervised practice beyond general registration. DVA's fee schedule does not explain the gap itself, it simply prices the two professions differently.

Trauma focussed therapy sits outside the normal session length

Standard consultations top out at "50 minutes or more" with no further tier. Trauma focussed therapy is the exception: items US52 (registered psychologist, $251.60) and US50 (clinical psychologist, $369.30) cover 90 minute or longer sessions, reserved for exposure work such as EMDR or prolonged exposure when a standard session is not long enough. DVA allows up to 8 of these sessions without prior approval. Past that, a case review must go to DVA with a detailed rationale before more sessions can be billed.

Group therapy is priced and capped differently again: $42.90 (registered) or $62.60 (clinical) per 60 minute session, limited to 12 sessions a calendar year, and it cannot be delivered by telehealth at all, unlike individual consultations which have video and (when video is unavailable) phone options.

What DVA psychology does not cover

DVA's own guidance for this profession states plainly that psychologists and clinical psychologists are not funded to provide couples counselling under this schedule. That gap matters for a clinic taking DVA referrals for relationship issues: the client needs to be pointed to Open Arms (Veterans and Families Counselling), which provides couples counselling and relationship information as a separate free service on 1800 011 046, not billed through the fee schedule at all.

This is a genuinely different funding stream to the fee-for-service items on this page. A practice that only bills the DVA schedule cannot claim for couples work no matter which item number is used, because no item exists for it.

Keeping US-codes straight in Cliniko

Because both schedules reuse similar item descriptions ("Consultation ... in rooms") against different two-letter prefixes and very different fees, the most common Cliniko setup mistake is one shared billable item priced at the wrong schedule's rate. A mixed-discipline practice, or one where a psychologist gains clinical endorsement partway through the year, needs both item sets loaded with names that state the registration type, not just the DVA code, so front desk staff do not bill a clinical psychologist's session at the registered psychologist's lower fee.

Claiming notes

Load these fees into your practice software

  1. Load both schedules as separate billable items in Cliniko so reception can tell a registered psychologist's US11 apart from a clinical psychologist's US01, since the item codes overlap in number but not in fee.
  2. Under Settings, then Data & docs, then Data imports, choose Billable items to bulk load the US-code list from a CSV instead of typing 24 items by hand for each schedule.
  3. The CSV needs the headings Item code, Name, Price (ex. tax), Taxable and Item type. Name the items clearly, for example "DVA US11 Consultation 20-50min (Psychologist)" versus "DVA US01 Consultation 30-50min (Clinical Psych)", so staff pick the right one against the treating clinician's registration.
  4. Set Taxable to your GST tax type only for the taxable items: US92, US90, US17, US07, US98 and US99. Leave the GST-free consultation, group and case conference items blank.
  5. Update prices each cycle with Cliniko's bulk price tool: export billable items from Data exports, edit the Price column against the Item ID, then re-import with only the price field enabled. There is no undo, so keep the exported CSV as a backup.
  6. DVA claiming in Cliniko needs the Tyro Health integration. Cliniko's help centre notes that a practice already using Tyro Health for Medicare bulk bills has DVA claiming as almost the same process. Store the client's DVA number on the patient file so it prefills the claim form.
