ServiceM8 form

Free ServiceM8 RCD test record form

This is a ServiceM8 Form for testing safety switches (RCDs) rather than appliances. It records each RCD's location, whether it is fixed or portable, its type and rated trip current, the push button result and the measured trip time, so the record matches what the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld) requires for workplace safety switches.

RCD test record form for electrical

A per RCD test record PDF in the job diary, separate from any test and tag record for the appliances downstream of it.

Set it up in ServiceM8

  1. In ServiceM8 open Settings > Forms > Add Form and name it RCD test record, separate from any test and tag form.
  2. Add each question above, matching the type (Choice means Multiple Choice) and ticking Mandatory where required is true.
  3. Create an asset type called Switchboard RCD if you use the Asset Management add-on, so each fixed RCD keeps its own test history across visits.
  4. For portable RCDs used on generators or extension boards, either create a second asset type or use the Fixed or portable choice field to keep them in the same form.
  5. Test the form on one fixed RCD and one portable RCD before rolling it out, since the two use different test methods.

Why this is a separate form from test and tag

A test and tag form records appliances and leads. This form records the RCD itself, the device fitted in the switchboard (or the portable unit plugged in ahead of a lead) that is supposed to trip the circuit. The Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld) treats them as separate duties: section 110 covers safety switches, other than portable ones, at a workplace, and section 113 repeats the same duty for service and office work. Neither section is about testing the equipment plugged into the switch. If your test and tag form has a single tick box for "RCD trip time," it is very likely being filled in against the wrong item, the appliance instead of the switch that protects it.

In Queensland the duty holder is the person conducting the business or undertaking at the workplace, not the tester alone, which is why the form below asks for the workplace and the RCD's own location rather than only a customer name.

What the regulation actually requires

Section 110(2) of the Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld) says a safety switch other than a portable one must be tested by a competent person under AS/NZS 3760 immediately after it is connected, and tested under, and at the intervals stated in, AS/NZS 3760 after that. Section 110(3) sets a different method for portable safety switches: tested by pushing the test button immediately after connection, then tested under, and at the intervals stated in, AS/NZS 3760. If a safety switch is not working properly, section 110(4) requires a durable tag attached immediately warning people not to use it, and the switch withdrawn from use. Sections 113(2) and 113(3) apply the same two testing methods to service work and office work. The form separates "Fixed (switchboard)" from "Portable" for this reason: the fixed RCD gets a competent person's test, the portable one gets a push button test, and the record should show which method was used.

Reading the result correctly

A push button test only proves the mechanism trips, not the trip time. Where you have an instrument that measures operating time, record it in milliseconds against the rated residual current on the RCD's label, and note the RCD type so a reviewer can check it against the maximum trip time for that type without needing the original instrument printout. Type I devices (10 mA or 30 mA) and Type II devices (above 30 mA) have different limits under AS/NZS 3760, so record the type every time rather than assuming it from the location.

What this form will not do

  • ServiceM8 Forms do not calculate one field from another, so Next test due is entered by the tester rather than worked out automatically from the interval.
  • The form records the RCD itself. It is not a substitute for a test and tag record of the appliances plugged in downstream, which needs its own form.
  • Maximum trip times by RCD type are set out in AS/NZS 3760, which is paywalled. Check the measured trip time against your own copy of the standard rather than the form's notes.
  • The Electrical Safety Regulation 2013 (Qld) sets the duty for Queensland workplaces. Other states and territories apply the model WHS Regulations, which may number the equivalent duty differently.
