How to ask for Google reviews from ServiceM8 after each job
ServiceM8 does this natively. Turn on the Customer Feedback add-on, paste your Google review link under Settings, Feedback, and switch on the Customer Feedback automation. Once a customer has paid, ServiceM8 emails or texts them, and with a Google link set every request goes straight to Google, which keeps you clear of Google's ban on selective asking.

What syncs, and when
| What | Direction | When | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Feedback request after online payment | ServiceM8 to customer | Customer pays the invoice online | With the add-on on, customers are asked for feedback after paying online. |
| Automated review request (email and/or SMS) | ServiceM8 to customer | Invoice paid, after the delay you set | Not sent for jobs of $0 or less, or if the customer already left feedback for that job. Sent by the staff member who invoiced the job. |
| {feedback} link in templates | ServiceM8 to customer | Whenever you send that email or SMS template | A unique link per message. With a Google review link saved, it goes straight to Google. |
| ServiceM8 feedback (stars and comment) | Customer to ServiceM8 | Customer submits the ServiceM8 feedback page | Stored in the job diary and shown on the Business Dashboard. With a Google link saved, automated requests and the {feedback} link skip this page. |
| Review received event | ServiceM8 to your system | job.review_received webhook | For custom automations built on the ServiceM8 API. |
What does not sync
- Google reviews themselves. Reviews left on Google stay on Google and do not appear in ServiceM8's feedback reports.
- The 30 day pause for regular clients. It only counts ServiceM8 feedback, not reviews left on Google or Facebook, so a contract client can be asked again after every paid job.
- Requests for unpaid jobs. The automation waits for payment, so a customer on 30 day terms is asked a month after the work.
Set it up
- Find your Google review link. ServiceM8's guide copies it from the reviews view in Google Search; Google Business Profile can also create a review link or QR code for you.
- In ServiceM8 go to Settings, ServiceM8 Add-ons and turn on Customer Feedback.
- Go to Settings, Feedback, scroll to the review section and paste the Google review link. Leave the Facebook field empty if you want every customer sent the same way.
- Open the automations list and enable Customer Feedback (add it with New Automation if it is not listed). Choose email, SMS or both, and how long to wait after payment.
- Edit the message. Name the job and the technician's first name with merge fields, and ask for an honest review, not a five star one.
- Optionally add {feedback} to your invoice email template, so customers who pay by bank transfer also get the link.
- Test with your own mobile on a small paid job before you switch it on for everyone.
The native option covers most businesses
You do not need Zapier or a paid reviews tool to ask for Google reviews from ServiceM8. The Customer Feedback add-on was built for this. When you save a Google review link in the feedback settings, ServiceM8 changes what its feedback link does: every automated request, and the {feedback} link in any email or SMS template, sends the customer straight to your Google review page instead of ServiceM8's own star rating page.
The automation fires after the invoice is paid, not when the job is completed. That is deliberate. Asking a customer to review you while they still owe money invites a complaint about the bill rather than the work. It also means customers on account terms are asked weeks later, so for them add {feedback} to your invoice email as well.
Google's rule on review gating
Review gating means asking customers how they rated you first, then only sending the happy ones to Google. Google's Maps contribution policy does not allow businesses to discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or to selectively solicit positive reviews. It also bans offering incentives, such as discounts or free services, for a review, and pressuring customers to review while on the premises.
ServiceM8's Google setting is compliant by design, because it sends everyone to Google. Watch for two traps. If you only set a Facebook link, ServiceM8 shows the Facebook invitation to customers who give 4 stars or more, which is a filter; do not copy that pattern into a Google automation. And do not ask technicians to hit a quota of reviews or to name themselves in them, which Google's policy lists as not allowed.
When a custom automation earns its keep
Build something beyond the add-on only when you need a rule it cannot express: ask only after certain job categories, skip warranty callbacks, send from a shared number, or ask a second time a week later if nothing arrived. ServiceM8's webhook events include job.invoice_paid, job.completed and job.review_received, so a small private add-on or a Zapier flow can decide who to ask and when. Keep the same principle: every customer who meets your rule gets the same Google link, whatever they thought of the job.
