NDIS exercise physiology price limits 2026-27

From 1 July 2026 NDIS pays $161.99 an hour nationally for exercise physiology (item 12_027_0126_3_3, Therapy - Exercise Physiologist - Direct Service), down from $166.99, the lowest hourly rate of any NDIS therapy discipline. Personal training is a separate, lower-priced item that cannot substitute for it.

What changed this year

  • The exercise physiology price limit fell 3.0 per cent for 2026-27, from $166.99 to $161.99 an hour nationally, item 12_027_0126_3_3. It is now the lowest-priced discipline in the Therapy and Professional Supports schedule, below dietetics at $178.99 and well below occupational therapy and speech pathology at $193.99.
  • Personal training moved the other way, rising from $67.00 to $69.39 an hour, item 12_029_0126_3_3. It sits in a different part of the schedule entirely, Other Labour Indexed Supports rather than Therapy and Professional Supports, and is not a substitute item for exercise physiology.
  • Exercise physiology is the only allied health discipline in this schedule that can register, and bill the identical rate, under either of two professional registration groups: 0126 (Exercise Physiology and Personal Training) or 0128 (Therapeutic Supports).

What NDIS pays for exercise physiology in 2026-27

The NDIS Pricing Schedule for 2026-27, effective 1 July 2026, cut the exercise physiology price limit to $161.99 an hour nationally, item 12_027_0126_3_3, down from $166.99 under the arrangements that ran from 24 November 2025. Remote and very remote rates fell by the same proportion, to $226.79 and $242.99.

That makes exercise physiology the lowest-priced discipline in the whole Therapy and Professional Supports schedule for 2026-27, below dietetics, podiatry, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and, by a wide margin, psychology.

Personal training is a different support, not a cheaper version of exercise physiology

Exercise physiologists working with NDIS participants often also run gym-based programs that look, to a participant, much like personal training. The NDIS treats them as genuinely different supports. Personal training, item 12_029_0126_3_3, sits under Core supports as an Other Labour Indexed Support, delivered by a personal trainer rather than an accredited exercise physiologist, priced at $69.39 an hour, well under half the exercise physiology rate.

The two items are not interchangeable. A participant's plan funds Capacity Building and Core supports separately, and an accredited exercise physiologist's clinical session has to be claimed against the exercise physiology item regardless of how similar the activity looks to a personal training session in the same gym.

Two registration groups, one price

Exercise physiology is unusual in the schedule for having two professional registration groups that both apply the same $161.99 rate: 0126, Exercise Physiology and Personal Training, and 0128, Therapeutic Supports. A provider registers under whichever group fits their service offering, and the participant pays the same price limit either way, so the choice of registration group is an administrative one rather than a pricing one.

Setting these up as billable items in Cliniko

Cliniko's billable item import and bulk price update tools bring the 2026-27 figures in together: the exercise physiology decrease and the personal training increase can be captured in the same CSV re-import. Keeping the two items visually distinct in Cliniko, not just by item code but by name, is worth the extra minute given how easily a busy reception desk could otherwise bill a gym session at the wrong rate.

Claiming notes

Load these fees into your practice software

  1. Add item 12_027_0126_3_3 under Settings, then Billable items, or bulk import a CSV with the columns Item code, Name, Price (ex. tax) and Item type, following Cliniko's billable item import process. Name it to distinguish it clearly from any personal training item on the same price list.
  2. If your practice also offers personal training sessions, set up 12_029_0126_3_3 as a separate, lower-priced billable item so reception cannot accidentally bill a personal training session at the exercise physiology rate.
  3. Refresh prices each 1 July with Cliniko's bulk price update: export billable items, edit the price column, then re-import with only the price field enabled, capturing both the exercise physiology decrease and the personal training increase in one pass. There is no undo, so keep the original export.
  4. Real-time claiming through Cliniko's Tyro Health integration is built for DVA and Medicare; nothing in its help centre points to an equivalent NDIS claiming pathway. Exercise physiology practices invoice the participant or their plan manager and wait for payment the ordinary way.
