Fee schedule

DVA exercise physiology fee schedule 2026-27

From 1 July 2026 DVA pays $77.10 (plus GST, taxable) for an initial or subsequent exercise physiology consultation in rooms (items EP10 and EP11), up from $75.10. Group sessions and supervised group aquatic sessions each pay $34.50 per client. Unlike physiotherapy, DVA treats exercise physiology as taxable, so add 10 per cent GST to every fee in the schedule.

What changed this year

  • Every dollar fee rose by roughly 2.6 per cent against the 1 July 2025 schedule. EP10 and EP11, the rooms consultations, moved from $75.10 to $77.10, and the group and aquatic group rate (EP30, EP32) from $33.60 to $34.50.
  • No rules changed. The item structure, group size limits and telehealth restrictions carry over unchanged from the 1 July 2025 schedule.
  • Exercise physiology is taxable across almost the whole schedule, the opposite of physiotherapy, chiropractic and osteopathy, which are GST-free for consultations. Only the case conferencing items (EP76 to EP78) are GST-free.
  • TPI Gold Card holders sit outside the treatment cycle for exercise physiology, but their initial consultations are still capped at three in a 12 month period, each needing a new episode of care or a new, unrelated condition and referral.

What changed on 1 July 2026

DVA published a new exercise physiologists schedule of fees effective 1 July 2026, replacing the schedule that started on 1 July 2025. The change is indexation only, roughly 2.6 per cent across every item, with no change to the rules or item structure. EP10 and EP11, the standard rooms consultations, are now $77.10, up from $75.10.

Group and aquatic group sessions (EP30, EP32) moved from $33.60 to $34.50 per client, and the home initial (EP12) from $80.65 to $82.75. As with every other allied health schedule, DVA notes the 1 July 2026 documents were still being finalised at the time of publication, so check the PDF again before relying on a figure for a large claim run.

Exercise physiology is taxable, not GST-free

This is the biggest practical difference from physiotherapy, chiropractic, osteopathy and dietetics. Those disciplines are GST-free health services under the GST Act, but exercise physiology consultations are taxable, meaning DVA pays the schedule fee plus 10 per cent GST on top. Only the multi-disciplinary case conferencing items (EP76 to EP78) are GST-free. Get this wrong in your billing software and you either short claim by 10 per cent on every invoice or remit GST you never collected.

Group and aquatic sessions are also taxable, and DVA sets them at $34.50 per client for a session of 2 to 12 participants running at least 30 minutes. The gym or pool admission is included in that fee, and you cannot claim separate travel for getting from your rooms to the facility.

TPI Gold Card holders and the treatment cycle

The treatment cycle, a GP referral covering up to 12 sessions or one year, does not apply to exercise physiology for Totally and Permanently Incapacitated (TPI) Gold Card holders. That does not mean unlimited billing: their initial consultations are capped at three in a 12 month period, each one needs a new episode of care or a new and unrelated condition with its own referral, and the end of cycle report (EP90) can never be claimed for them.

For everyone else the standard cycle rules apply. One session per client per day across every type, individual, group or aquatic, and the end of cycle report can be sent after eight sessions but a full 12 should still be delivered before a new cycle starts.

Loading the schedule into Cliniko

With around 27 items, exercise physiology sits at a similar size to physiotherapy, but the GST setup is inverted: tick Taxable on almost everything and leave it blank only on the three case conferencing items. That is the opposite default from a physio or chiro import, so it is worth checking each row rather than copying a GST-free template from another discipline.

Build EP30 and EP32 as their own billable items priced per participant, since a group exercise class of eight veterans should generate eight invoice lines at $34.50 each, not one lump sum. When DVA republishes the schedule each 1 July, export your existing billable items, update only the Price column against the new PDF, and re-import with the price field only.

Claiming notes

Load these fees into your practice software

  1. Cliniko supports bulk import of billable items. Go to Settings, then Data & docs, then Data imports, choose Billable items and click Import.
  2. Before importing, add a GST tax type under Settings if you have not already. Because most exercise physiology items are taxable, set the Taxable column to your GST tax type for every row except EP76, EP77 and EP78.
  3. Build a CSV with a heading row and these columns: Item code, Name, Price (ex. tax), Taxable, Item type. Put the DVA code (for example EP10) in Item code, a name that starts with DVA (for example "DVA EP10 Initial consultation, rooms") so reception can find it, the fee from the table above in Price (ex. tax), and service in Item type.
  4. Create separate billable items for EP30 (group) and EP32 (aquatic group), each priced per client, so invoicing multiple participants in one session is a case of adding the line once per attendee.
  5. Upload the CSV, click Next to match information, check each column matched, then click Import and finish. The items appear under Settings, Billable items.
  6. Each July, update prices in bulk rather than creating new items: export billable items as a CSV from Data exports, keep the Item ID column and the price column, change the prices, then import it again and enable only the price field. Cliniko warns there is no undo, so keep the original export.
  7. To claim DVA from inside Cliniko you need the Tyro Health integration on a Tyro Health plan that includes DVA claiming. Store the client's DVA number in their patient file so it fills the claim form automatically.
